revive an iPhone

October 27th, 2008 — 12:15pm

My friend and myself recently experienced our Edge iPhones appearing to be dead. No sign of life, and no response from even plugging it in, neither from an AC adapter or plugging into a computer.

Before making an appointment at the Genius Bar or shelling out for a new 3G, try the cold boot by pressing and holding the Lock button on the top and the Home button on the face of the iPhone. If your phone isn’t completely a goner, then you should see the Apple logo and a reboot happen after about 5 seconds. If you see nothing still, then go ahead and make an appointment at the Genius Bar and see if they can help you.

For myself, I did not do this at first, and I went to the extent of removing my SIM and inserting it into another phone, because I thought mine was a goner. I did the same procedure after wards, and got my phone to boot up with a SIM error. I inserted my SIM back in and good to go.

Want to go to Stanford University for Free?

October 24th, 2008 — 2:37pm

Well, you can… kind of. Stanford University is offering their intro Computer Science course online for free!

There is a class course guide (pdf) which will give you an insight to what the curriculum and syllabus is.

You can view the video lectures online, download them (mp4), YouTube, or Podcast via iTunes.

You will need Eclipse IDE for Java

The classes are intro, so they’re not super crazy, but so far, they’re awesome. The first one is the first day of class and they go over basic class items, logistics, attendance stuff. You probably do not have to watch the whole episode.

The professor has a good sense of humor and is very knowledgeable.

Esc Startlogic – via Tucows

October 23rd, 2008 — 1:43pm

I recently escaped from Startlogic hosting. I use that term pretty literally and I have came across many other postings online that share the same feelings about them. There is even a site called: startlogicsucks.com which not only shares the story of the creator of the site, but many other users tell their stories as well. You can even add yours! I’m currently trying to pull the rest of my clients away from them as well – which I never did receive any referral credits for, because their referral program is a pain. You had to call them and set up an account that way in order to get a referral – yeah right and wait 30 minutes? I don’t think so.

Trying to cancel an account is a struggle to say the least. Obtaining an EPP code, which is required to transfer a domain name, is quite a journey, if they even get back to you.

If you want to transfer your domain to a new host then here are some tips.

It appears that they use Tucows as the domain registry, so I did find some other ways to assist on transferring a domain from Startlogic. (I have nothing against Tucows by the way)

The first thing to do is just go to the source for Tucows Registry management. You do not even need to access your domain information via Startlogic’s Vdeck, which is not the best experience and doesn’t give you all the info you need anyways. You will want to change your DNS pointers to the new hosting company. If you’re not sure what these are, then contact your new host or you can look it up.

You would normally have 2 DNS names, for example:
DNS1 = ns1.hostmonster.com
DNS2 = ns2.hostmonster.com.

It may also be just an IP address. Ask your new host for details. The DNS pretty much just tells the Host of your domain name where to point your domain to. For example: You could have a domain name with Startlogic pointing to a site you have hosted at Hostmonster, as long as your DNS points to there and you have properly added the domain on the other end. (adding domain process varies per hosting company, check with yours to find out how) You can change this from within Startlogic, but I’m going to show you how to do it directly through the registry.
Go to: https://manage.opensrs.net/
Login into your account using your domain name and the same user name/password as you set up with Startlogic.

1) You may first need to disable the "lock" on your account which is automatically enabled which is a nice security measure, but it can also make it a little more difficult to transfer. Go to Domain Locking and click disable.

2) Go to Name Servers and change your DNS servers to point to the new Hosting company. Again, check with your host for what their DNS name servers should be.

3) Go to Domain Extras and get the EPP authorization code. Normally you would have to email your host to obtain this and I’m sure they will not get back to you promptly. You can change this or keep it as is, but either way, make sure you save this locally for future access.

4) Update you contact info under the Profile, Billing, and Admin. Make sure your email address is correct and primarily one that is independent from the old hosting company. They will send the transfer info and request to your email associated with this account. When you transfer, if you are using your host’s email system MX server, then you will probably lose all of the emails upon cancellation of the account. You may want to back up your emails locally. If your email is set up for IMAP or POP and you already have pulled your emails via your mail client, then you should be safe.

*I highly recommend using Google’s MX servers.
Check here for details:
www.google.com/a

That way no matter which host you go to, your email will remain on Google’s MX servers. It’s FREE and you can use any of your domain names)

5) Now you are prepared to set up a transfer with your new hosting company. They will handle most of it for you, but they will require the EPP code. You will then receive an email notice from Tucows notifying you about the transfer. You can cancel it, act upon it to approve by clicking the link in the email and entering the requested info and EPP code again, or you can just wait 5 to 7 business days and it will continue to go through if not reacted upon.

Keep in mind, this is only if the host you have uses Tucows for the domain registry, which a lot do. I switched one of my domains to Hostmonster for the primary account, but they use another registry now.

Try to do this weeks before you want to transfer. It takes forever to get through to Startlogic and get the cancellation taken care of. They will avoid you as much as possible if you mention the word "cancel."

Another recommendation. I have the majority of my domains registered with GoDaddy and just the primary with the new host for the account. GoDaddy’s account management is awesome and simple. It is easy to access all aspects of a domain name, DNS, MX servers, etc. Plus when transferring host, all I need to do is repoint the DNS at GoDaddy instead of having to try to transfer all of the names via the techniques mentioned above.

There are actually several anti-host sites for several hosting companies. It is hard to find the perfect one, but hopefully you do not get stuck with one of the worse.

My recommendation is: Hostmonster.com

Good luck!

Bansky’s Village Pet Store

October 17th, 2008 — 8:53am

This is an awesome installation by world renown guerilla street artist Bansky. This differs from his traditional stencils and graffiti pieces that have been posted up all around the world.

As a demonstration and representation of the exploit to animals that the human civilization has had to the animal world, this piece will definitely get you thinking. It is amazing how much details and work was put into this exhibit, including the creative ideas and the work into the animatronics & sculpting.

Skin to Win Challenge entries

October 15th, 2008 — 6:01pm

The Adobe, Scalenine, and EffectiveUI Skin to Win Challenge had a great turn out. I reviewed the entries the past few days and was quite impressed! There are some very talented designers and developers who entered and brought their own flavors to the mix.

There was everything from simple and basic, to wild and very creative. A great array of the possibilities that Flex allows for skinning/styling for sure.

I still have no idea who has won, as I am only a single judge, and the winners will be chosen by an accumulative scoring system with the other judges scores.

The winner will be announced soon!

Posemaniacs artist reference tool

October 14th, 2008 — 11:53am

I was just introduced to Posemaniacs. This site is awesome to say the least.

It has references to figures in a variety of poses in their muscle anatomy view. But these poses all have 3D views which you can rotate within their flash tool. This is an awesome reference tool for new artists, students, and even professionals. This can really benefit those doing figure studies, storyboards, and comic artists.

It has other tools tool, like a 30 second drawing tool, which will display various images randomly for 30 seconds.

A negative space tool, which shows figures in negative space.

A Hands for Drawing tool, where you can manipulate a simple 3D objects of hands, torsos and more.

Share music with Mojo and iTunes!

October 11th, 2008 — 5:00pm

Mojo is an awesome new app that works in conjunction with iTunes.

Both Mac & PC available

So what the hell does it do?

It allows you to share libraries over local networks (like the existing iTunes Share feature) and even better, remotely over the internet.

But instead of just sharing, you can also download the music from your friends library!

It is really easy to set up and start using.

1)Simply download Mojo and install it.

2) Open it and create an account. (username/password). Your username will be something like: username@deusty.com. (
the @ Domain is going to be deusty.com.)

3) Find friends. There are 2 ways: locally and remotely.
Locally: You will automatically see libraries that are open for public view on your local network.
Remotely: You just need to add your friends by clicking add and entering their username. You will need to get their approval.

4) Listen to their music and download it.
Click on a friend/library in your list. This will open a iTunes-like window where you can preview the library. DRM’ed music is red and can’t download, and if you already have the music, it will be grey and null. Click on the song(s) and play it. Or if you want to simply download it, then highlight the song(s)and click the download button in the bottom of the app.

And of course, please “share” responsibly and give musicians credit where due.

Preferences:
You do have a choice of prefs, such as how you want i to download, where to, and stuff like that. By default, it will download into your default iTunes library location (user/music/iTunes/iTunes library) and create a playlist called Mojo in iTunes where the new songs will be added to for quick reference.
