Modern In Denver Fall Issue – My Artist Profile

October 4th, 2009 — 11:04am

I wanted to announce that the new Modern In Denver Fall issue is out!

This issue has a lot of great features and articles from the cover story, Visual Acoustics, “a New documentary that reveals the life, work and inspiration of photographer Julius Shulman” to Digital Scandanavia, “A Look at a collaborative cross-disciplinary art and design initiative asking students to engage in digital process-based research that explores multi-scalar design.”

Mixed in with these enticing features is my very first published Artist Profile! Melissa Belongea provided me an opportunity to speak about my art and my life in this 4 page spread (pages 76-79). Of course they couldn’t cover everything about me in those few paragraphs and photographs, I feel Belongea captured a lot of important aspects about my perspective on art, my growth, and inspiration.

Visit my recent works here:

I would like to thank Eddie Breidenbach for the profile photo he shot in a moments notice, and my girlfriend, Crystal, who also took a photo of me painting and has been a big inspiration with my art lately. Of Course, a shout out to Melissa Belongea & Modern In Denver Magazine for interviewing me and providing me this opportunity.

You can pick up an issue of the magazine at the following locations:
Tattered Cover
Mod Livin
MCA Denver
Composition
New Era Paint
Pearl Velo
Cultural Legacy Bookstore
The Kirkland Museum
BMOCA (Boulder)
Invironments (Boulder)

Austistic Savant is No Idiot at Drawing!

March 25th, 2009 — 9:01pm

I caught wind of this on the Lewis and Floorwax mornign show here in Denver on 103.5 The Fox. I heard about it, but the radio can only convey so much. what they were speaking about and how this artist could draw from a super photographic memory sounded amazing. Even the stories from his childhood of drawing acurately from the age of 5 sounded too amazing to be true.

I’m going to do some more research on this artist, but have a look at this video. Steven Wilcher is autistic and very artistic.

Here is good post from O’Reilly Media about the brain as a camera.

What Teachers Make!

February 3rd, 2009 — 8:12pm

This is a great Spoken word with a lot of truth behind it.

Enjoy:

I am placing it under Music, since it falls under poetry.

Poster Boy

January 22nd, 2009 — 9:53am

I like this approach on street art. Utilizing what is already there and being resourceful, especially with content which is not very pleasant or creative such as the advertisements Poster Boy targets for his creations. Don’t get me wrong, there is good advertisement out there, which can also be used for this collage work, but when it is so mass marketed, people can get tired of the redundancy. Poster Boy adds a little flare, creativity, humor, and pushes the underground art technique of the streets.

Shepard Fairey and Obama

January 19th, 2009 — 9:59pm

In this video, Shepard Fairey explains his objectives and motives behind one of the most iconic images from the recent election, and possibly from any United States election.

The Barack Obama poster has become many things in today’s society, from propaganda posters and stickers, a symbol of change and hope, a marketing piece, a channel to transcend politics into various communities and subcultures which would normally be untouched by politics, modern art piece, inspiration, and much more.

Like many of Fairey’s pieces, it has spawned copy cats, and even a website application developed in Flex which you can create your very own stylized piece.

Here is what Fairey had to say about it:

One of my favorite reporters, Stephen Colbert, even had him on his show. Fairey even mentioned that he’s not enforcing the copyright unless someone is abusing it. True street style and mentality. It’s not so much about the profit, as it is with the impression on society and the exposure to the many who can enjoy seeing it. He even did a Colbert portrait in the style of the Obama portrait. It was nice to see that Colbert did not give him a lot of Sh!t like he does with many of his guests.

No matter if you like Obama or not, or if you like Fairey’s portrait of the new president, you cannot argue that this piece of art will be an iconic piece from this era.

Happy Halloween!

November 1st, 2008 — 9:03pm

Here is the pumpkin I carved this year. I haven’t carved one in a couple years, and it turned out to be pretty fun.

I had no idea what I was going to do, I saw some pumpkin on TV with a brain, so i thought that was a cool idea. I just started carving and this is the ugly thing that resulted.

I used a steak knife, and a metal shish-kabob skewer. I wish I had some wood or clay carving tools, but this is as good as I could get it with basic utensils.

Happy Halloween!

Bansky’s Village Pet Store

October 17th, 2008 — 8:53am

This is an awesome installation by world renown guerilla street artist Bansky. This differs from his traditional stencils and graffiti pieces that have been posted up all around the world.

As a demonstration and representation of the exploit to animals that the human civilization has had to the animal world, this piece will definitely get you thinking. It is amazing how much details and work was put into this exhibit, including the creative ideas and the work into the animatronics & sculpting.

Posemaniacs artist reference tool

October 14th, 2008 — 11:53am

I was just introduced to Posemaniacs. This site is awesome to say the least.

It has references to figures in a variety of poses in their muscle anatomy view. But these poses all have 3D views which you can rotate within their flash tool. This is an awesome reference tool for new artists, students, and even professionals. This can really benefit those doing figure studies, storyboards, and comic artists.

It has other tools tool, like a 30 second drawing tool, which will display various images randomly for 30 seconds.

A negative space tool, which shows figures in negative space.

A Hands for Drawing tool, where you can manipulate a simple 3D objects of hands, torsos and more.
