Live Painting at Red Rocks

September 18th, 2010 — 4:44pm

I was invited to do some Live Painting last night at Snowboard on the Rocks event held at Colorado’s Red Rocks amphitheater. Well, the invite was around 10:00p the night before, and kind of caught me off guard. I never have done “live painting” at an event before, let alone at Red Rocks. After some beers and thinking, it hit me that this was an amazing opportunity that I had to jump on.

I thought of my subject on the way home from work yesterday evening and printed out a couple photos. I decided since one of the best MC’s of the hip hop world was performing, I figured he would make a good subject, so a portrait of Del was the objective.

I got to the venue and there were two other artists set up on the right and left sides of the stage. I met one of the talented artists named Brian, who did an amazing charcoal portrait of Del as well, so I guess the funky homosapien was the man of the night. Brian was a really cool person and humble about his awesome piece and talent. Although it didn’t turn out to be an original idea, I decided to proceed with my acrylic portrait of Del.

I think this was one of the quickest pieces I have ever painted, as I was just feeling the energy and was excited for the whole show and also wanted to make sure to catch some of the videos and performances. This was a style that I was just experimenting with based on my time and surroundings. A little looser, expressionistic style then some of my other portraits. Plus, this was a larger scale piece then I usually have worked with, but I must say, larger pieces are much more fun to paint. I was pretty focused and laying down the paint for some time and didn’t even pay attention to time, and then I went back in the crowd with my girl for a break and to watch the beginning of Del’s performance. I headed back down to finish the portrait while Del was still performing, which was a really awesome experience. Bukue One was heading up the stage as well and throwing down some skating skillz.

It turned out to be a great event, even with minor technical difficulties (not the Mack Dawg snow video but w the projector). I did miss some of the videos premiered, but I can watch those on DVD, I’m not sure when I’ll be able to paint up near the stage at Red Rocks again.

I received several compliments and offers, which was kind of my guide of the progress of this piece, as it was a larger canvas and I was crammed in a little corner at the right of the stage, so I couldn’t step back very far to view it in its entirety and ideal viewing distance.

Finally, near the end of the show, another girl expressed her interest in it and offered to purchase it. Not only did it feel good to get great feedback and an offer on a piece, but it just added so much more to my night. Needless to say, I sold the piece and I only have some photos of it from my phone. Thank you to the girl (Beth?) who purchased this painting. I really hope you enjoy it! And thanks to everyone who provided their support and compliments! And a big Thanks to Melissa for inviting me to paint at this awesome event!

I also got a chance to head backstage and meet the man himself, and he was really chill, even with all of the fans hitting him up for intros and pics. It was a good night.

A couple feet a snow to 77º – This is Colorado!

November 6th, 2009 — 8:55am

A couple weeks ago the front range was hit with a winter storm that dumped up to 2 feet in some of the metro areas. I was shoveling about a foot and a half myself in Denver.

Now yesterday it was a record setting 77ºF at DIA, and today has the same forecast hi temperature.

A-Basin opens Wednesday Oct 15, 2008

April 19th, 2009 — 3:20pm

The wait is over! Well will be tomorrow.

A-Basin will open Wednesday October 15, 2008! It will be the first resort in Colorado and possible nationally, to open for the 2008 season.

Late addition:
My apologies for not mentioning that Loveland also opened this day. So, they both tied in this friendly competition of being the first ski/snowboard resort to open for the 2008/2009 season.

The first day isn’t always the greatest snow and conditions, but it’s something to ride/ski on!

Half million half pipe – Shaun White

April 19th, 2009 — 3:17pm

There has been a rumor floating around about a secret $500,000 half pipe in the hills near Silverton Colorado. Who is behind this beautiful U Jump? Red Bull and Oakley have sponsored the construction of this beast at 12,300 ft! Apparently the highest and possibly the largest ever built.

half million dollar half pipe

It is also rumored that it has wall gaps throughout all the way down, so the rider will HAVE to clear those in order to land. It is hard to gauge from this photo, but it seems like it could be over 100 yards at least.

It is only accessible by heli or snowmobile, and they also fund White a house in a near by town, and one very important feature, avalanche control around and above the location.

It is open to any Red Bull sponsored rider, not just Shaun white, but White is apparently planning on filming a new video with the same hi quality HD cameras and Heli’s used in Quicksilver’s and Travis Rice’s That’s It That’s All video released earlier this season.

Vote in Colorado by Mail!

November 1st, 2008 — 12:04pm

If you’re a Colorado resident and registered voter, you can apply to vote by mail-in ballot rather than waiting in line this year.

This is Colorado’s longest ballot, so planning for extra time to understand the bill would be beneficial. You should receive the 2008 Colorado Ballot Information Booklet in the mail. It is a large book, and has a lot info on the amendments on the ballot. If you’re not familiar with using one of these, they are pretty straight forward.

They provide a general overview of the amendment, summary and analysis, and some go to the length of detailed graphs and charts. Then they provide unbiased Arguments For and Against the amendment which help sum up the item so you can make your decision knowing the arguments and possible repercussions. They also provide a Fiscal Impact summary to notify you if and how it will effect the economy.

You can preview this and even use the “cheat-sheet” in the beginning to note your voting preferences for this election. You can then use this for quick reference for making your voting choices.

Visit this site to download the application and to obtain application mail-in info. It has info for the ballot as well.
Hurry, the deadline for the application is Oct 28th!

Not a registered voter in CO?
Monday October 6, is the last day to register to vote in the November election. You can mail in your form and have it postmarked by 5pm October 6 and still make it for this year’s big election!
(You have to be registered 29 days prior to the election date.)
You can get the forms to register on the city’s web site:

http://www.denvergov.org/elections

The registration form is also an application for the mail-in ballot, so you get 2 for one with this easy application!

Need help voting in Colorado?

November 1st, 2008 — 10:58am

Well, everyone has their own perspective and reasoning for their voting choices. If you’re not sure, you should first read the Colorado Ballot information and get an idea of the amendments on the ballot and the candidates running for the various offices. You can review the Colorado ballot here in various languages:

http://www.state.co.us/gov_dir/leg_dir/lcsstaff/balpage.htm

If after you review this and still can’t make a decision, you can find references online that may assist. They will of course be biased based on the party or organization displaying it. An uneducated vote is a poor one though. You might as well be undecided on it. Even though the site below provide a list of their endorsements, I highly encourage you to read the amendments thoroughly and try to gain an understanding yourself. Some may be confusing, in the way they are written, or who they actually benefit, so just try read it over and over, or ask friends for assistance.

Here is the Colorado Democratic Party and their views:

http://www.coloradodems.org/

Here is one from ProgressNowAction.org

http://www.progressnowaction.org/page/content/gotv08/

You can find several of these sites and their endorsements online from all sides.

You can use this as a quick reference for your voting choices. Again, please do not go with what other people tell you to vote for or suggest, but if you share some of the same beliefs as the site or organization, then there is a good chance their info may help you.

Either way.. get out there and VOTE!
