Abstract Rude Rejuvanation Show featuring Aceyalone, Myka 9 and DJ Drez

May 20th, 2009 — 9:36am

I just hit up the Aceyalone, Myka 9, and Ab Rude show at the classic Larimer Lounge. I got there late and only caught Ichiban’s last couple tracks, which were dope!

The heads from Project Blowed and Freestyle Fellowship blew up Denver and The Larimer Lounge!

ab rude rejuvenation

Myka 9 had a decent performance, but unfortunately the sound for his set wasn’t the greatest, so it was hard fro him to get those clean rhythmic melodies in his hooks to roll through.

Aceyalone definitely killed the mic and also threw in some new tracks that I haven’t heard yet.

Ab Rude threw down from Rejuvenation, his new album and of course spit the classics. It was an overall good show, but surprised about the small turnout. Del was also playing at the Bluebird that night, which may have taken some of the crowd.

DJ Drez was one of the show’s top performances with whomever he was playing with or even solo. His skills are sick, including tracks from his new album, Jahta Beat, where he focuses on mixing down tempo, hip hop and eastern sounds and instruments. His beats were smooth and cuts were always on point!

The Mighty Underdogs @ Bluebird

March 20th, 2009 — 10:36am

I went and checked out The Mighty Underdogs @ the Bluebird last night. If you’re not familiar with them, they are Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Lateef (Latryx, Maroons, DJ Shadow), and Headnodic (Crown City Rockers – formerly known as Mission).

They’re out touring promoting their new album Dropping Science Fiction. I haven’t heard the whole album and listening to the new songs live in a venue with not the best sound system forces me to check it out with my headphones before I can form a solid opinion on it.

From what I did hear, there was some good stuff for sure, but nothing I truly fell in love it. Their performance was off the hook though, and of course Gift killed it with the mad lyricism!

Headnodic definitely added some beat flare with his DJ and MPC production skills. Lateef, added his rhythmic jazzy rhyme style, which they all make this a very dynamic Quannum crew.

Gotta love it when they throw down the classics too, Gift of Gab hit up some old Blackalicious hits and had the crowd bumping!

ADOBE MAX 2008

November 21st, 2008 — 9:58pm

I just returned from Adobe MAX 2008 in San Fran! It was an awesome event and Adobe did a really great job putting it all together and ending it with an awesome party at the Academy of Sciences and De Young Museum!

There were some really great sessions, showing off the new features of CS4, best practices of development and design, techniques, other products like Pixel Bender, and of course Flash Catalyst (Thermo) was a major focus.

San Francisco is an awesome city too. Although I did not get to venture out very far from the Moscone, what I did see was great. I did miss Uncle Joey and Jesse & his Rippers :( .

Sweatshop killed it!

September 13th, 2008 — 10:15pm

I attending this show last night and I was VERY IMPRESSED!

I missed Three the Ward Way, but those guys are pretty sick too. I have seen them before.

Kyprios opened up and warmed up the crowd. His solo set was so tight. He definitely has mad skills and great stage presence.

Once the whole crew went up, you could feel the energy level rise a few orders of magnitude. They brought it, and brought it hard. Throwing down songs from their new album Water Street, and a lot of their old songs. The sound was so great, even with a group of 6 MC’s singing and rhyming. The DJ crushed the vinyl and was always on point.

A well performed encore to end the show was just enough to make a great show! The crowd was hyped, and Sweatshop knew it. They delivered and I have no regrets going to that show. That was my first time seeing them live, it was so nice to see the faces behind the songs that I have enjoyed for the past several years.

Sweatshop Union in Denver Sept 12

September 13th, 2008 — 10:11pm

One of my favorite Hip Hop groups is coming to Denver tonight: Sweatshop Union.

They’ll be playing at The Marquis Theater on 20th & Larimer in downtown Denver.

Their latest album Water Street was awesome and retained that classic Sweatshop style with a little more range. If you like hip hop, then this is a must show. Their word play, and jazzy-blues inspired beats, mashed with various other styles, bring a unique flavor. Not only that, but their content and subject matter is inspiring with a little more in depth meaning than the typical “brag about my skills.” Everything from relationships, family, friends, to politics and struggles in life, put SU on a higher level.

GOP Crashers – Rage Against the Machine

September 6th, 2008 — 2:49pm

During a music festival in the capitol of Minnesota Thursday evening, police shut down power to the stage and event when Rage Against the Machine showed up for an impromptu show closer. I’m not sure what motivated police to act on Rage and not the other groups, but it seemed really unfair, especially without any idea of their intentions and which songs they would play which could possibly be offensive to the RNC.

De La Rocha lead the band in an a Capella version of “Bulls on Parade.”

They actually weren’t as much of a party crasher as those who were in the arena during McCain’s speech and were very out spoken. I did not hear what they had to say, but saw them being escorted out by security during McCain’s speech last night. I was searching for a clip of that, but couldn’t find it yet.

Who brings a tuba to a hip hop show? The Roots!

June 5th, 2008 — 9:29am

I just saw The Roots and Erika Badu at The Filmore in Denver. It was an amazing show. First let me apologize for the poor quality of these photos, but they were taken

The Roots killed it with the presence of a very lively and energetic band. Owne Biddle, bassist, laid down some heavy lines, Kamal Gray threw down on the ol’ keys, and the TUBA PLAYER Damon “Tuba Gooding Jr.” was bumping! He was actually pretty mobile with that heavyweight brass instrument. I believe there was a percussionist, but couldn’t see him from my position relative to the stage.

The guitarist KILLED it! Captain Kirk Douglas was amazing and as they all put on great solos, but the guitarist definitely stood out. He practically put on a mini show, with emotional riffs and synchronized lyricism and acapella to his licks.

Black Thought of course brought the lyricism and livliness to the stage. His energy was on point and rhymes were loud and clear. Nice sound Filmore!

I can’t leave out QuestLove on drums. He seems so natural on the drums, like it was involuntary, and just another breath for him.

Erika Badu then came on, with a very theatrical intro and set. Not only was her voice beautiful, her band amazing, but she had a beat pad and laptop set up (Macbook Pro ;) ), and she was conducting and playing tracks form that, and then between songs, throwing down some improv beats. Not just simple beats, but some very impressive beat patterns and combinations.

Mac Lethal in Denver!

May 3rd, 2008 — 11:28pm

I just saw Mac Lethal and SKUUUUUU! (inside show joke)! he played with Grieves at the Marquis Thursday night. I had just recently got into Mac Lethal and was SO GLAD I went to his show.

Mac Lethal

His energy was up, cracking jokes and best of all, his rhymes are amazing. His performance was awesome and representative of true innovative underground. Intellectual rhymes and creative word play pushes Mac Lethal out in front of this recent flood of good underground hip hop artists.

Mac Lethal in Denver

Another note, I played at the Marquis sometime last year, then heard they got a new system. Their old system was one of the better ones I’ve played at, but that night with Mac Lethal was tight. The sound was clear, direct, and had a lot of punch. The system there is sounding great. You get the beat flowing through your bod and you can make out virtually every word of the lyricist. Nice work Marquis!
