Copyright Criminals Documentary

January 19th, 2010 — 10:33am

Copyright Criminals is a documentary that traces the roots of Hip Hop back to the streets of New York where sampling was just part of the game. Now, it is the game for many in the multi-billion dollar industry of music.

It provides perspectives from both those who sample and from those who have been sampled from. The growth of music in a variety of genres has strong roots in sampling.

In this day and age where technology is easily accessible, sharing info & content across the various channels has become easier than ever, but more importantly, the demand to obtain info & content has also risen. There are a couple facets of copyright infringement that are widely spreading as a result; illegal duplication and distribution of music, and the age-old sampling of others’ music to create new tracks. Emerging tools within the music industry, both hardware and software, are making it easier to remix, sample, cut, mash-up a multitude of music into new productions.

This documentary takes a look into this art form to review the source, process, politics, and art of sampling. It features foudning figures of hip hop such as Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers (Atmosphere, P.O.S.), Ninja Tune, and more.

From the other side, sampled artists such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s drummer and the world’s most sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled musician, the original funk legend George Clinton.

(by the way, I sampled some of these snippets from the Copyright Criminals website, modified and re-purposed it for this post – thanks www.copyrightcriminals.com)

Here is a nice clip from the documentary:

Where in the world is Noah Salasnek?

December 29th, 2009 — 4:56pm

Some would ask Noah who?

For those who have snowboarded before parks were standard at every resort, before pipe dragons were manufactured, or the term “Super Pipe” was even coined, may remember a revolutionary snowboarder by the who was responsible for changing the game with his strong skateboard influence. If you don’t remember him personally, he’s the man behind the iconic Sims board with bottom of a skateboard with trucks as the base graphic. I’m talking about Noah Salasnek!

He’s been off the grid for several years now, but in the older vids which were lucky to be filmed on hi 8mm, he threw down the first generation of “jibbing” along with a hybrid part including amazing snowboarding and skateboarding. (Shout out to John Cardiel too!)

Powder to Rails has put together a couple documentaries about this amazing rider and even if you rode back in the day and desired his Sims pro models, or am a new rider from today, Noah is a pioneer that you should check out and see why snowboarding is where it’s at today.

I can;t find part 1, but here is Part 2 of 2:

Shaun White’s New Tricks announced + video!

November 3rd, 2009 — 4:10pm

It is November 3 and red Bull’s Project X has announced the new tricks that Shaun White has added to his arsenal from the secret Half Pipe in Silverton.

They have some amazing video footy of these tricks and the stories behind them too.

Front Double Cork 1080º
What!

Switch Back 900º (kind of late double cork)
(for newbies-switch backsides are considered pretty damn hard even if it is less than a normal 1080º – plus he styled this out)

Double Back Rodeo
(alley-oop style!)

Cab Double Cork 1080º
Go from a 1080º double cork to a cab 1080º double cork? Who Knows?

PJ Ladd Revisited

April 19th, 2009 — 3:23pm

I was recently showing an old friend some skate clips while reminiscing about the “old days”. He had never seen PJ Ladd’s Wonderful Horrible Life, nor seen any of his skills in any other publication. We went to YouTube and viewed a few clips… to say the least, he was definitely impressed.

When this video came out, it was crazy. It was a shop video by Coliseum and it was simply amazing. You will need to do some double takes at his tricks just to ensure yourself he really did that. Switch? Nollie? How many revolutions? Bigger Spins? Where are his magnets?

It is old news, but as we revisited this, it brought back one of the points in skating where you see someone skate and you just get that feeling about how amazing and great skateboarding is and the talent out there.

Lakai Fully Flared intro

April 19th, 2009 — 3:22pm

Just check this intro. I know it’s old news, but still impressive to display the true art behind skateboarding and how good cinematography can expose it. One of the best I’ve seen for a skate video. Spike Jones does it again!

please note that this intro is in super slow motion, it is probably not your connection.

Lakai “Where the Wild Things Are” series

April 19th, 2009 — 3:21pm

Aside from being one of my all time favorite books, now Lakai has featured them on a series of shoes! Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are is now part of the Lakai family.

The models are: Howard, Mariano, MJ and Telford

This is in following to Spike Jones’ latest film project. Although, I hear that his movie may be a bit on the scary side, and may not be released for that reason. Even if it is not child friendly, the story has a great theme and concept for any age. The exploration of imagination is beneficial for anyone, and definitely applies to skateboarding.

Spike Jones has been a large factor in the skateboard film industry. He has worked on several projects with the Lakai family, including Girl’s Yeah Right and Lakai’s Fully Flared. He not only captures the traditional skateboard footy and puts it together well, he brings in great cinematic such as Yeah right’s invisible skateboard segway.

Fallen Ride the Sky Video Thief!

April 19th, 2009 — 3:21pm

I went to the Fallen skate video premier last night in Denver at the Bluebird Theater, hosted by 303 skateboards. After watching the impressive 303 video, the Fallen Ride the Sky DVD ended up missing. Someone from the early show stole the DVD, so the late show was a bust!

Many people paid $8 to hit up this video, and it’s not 303′s fault, but some inconsiderate kid who thinks having the DVD prior to public release is a personal priority. Sure, go ahead and upload it to Youtube and distribute it to friends, but all of those people at the late show, mostly 21+ crowd, are ready to kick your ass! Save the bootlegging crap for the blockbuster industry.
